CHAPTER 12

Maybe it was the wine, but all Viv could think about was how sexy Achak was tonight. Well, not just tonight, but especially tonight. The suit wasn’t a look she’d put him in all the time, but it definitely had a certain appeal.

Even before she stepped into the ladies’ room, Viv knew she was going to get drilled by Cass. The redhead was practically bursting with her desire to ask what were no doubt going to be some very personal questions. No sooner had she come out of her stall and started to wash her hands than Cass was there. The redhead leaned against the marble countertop of the stylishly designed row of bathroom sinks, and levelled a penetrating stare at her.

“You failed to mention he was staying with you,” Cass immediately accused, though her tone was playful and coy.

As she felt considerable heat rise to her chest and face, Viv attempted to cool off with some cold water. She was careful to not ruin her makeup or get her dress wet.

“How did you know?” Viv asked her, though she could already guess the answer.

“Oh come on. As if the mountain man had a tux stashed away in his teepee.”

Viv rolled her eyes at the reflection in the mirror.

“It’s… complicated," she admitted. "Some stuff happened, and he’s better off staying with me than out in the forest.”

Cass leaned close and challenged, “That’s not the only reason, and don’t try to tell me otherwise. I know you, Viv, and this is out of the norm for you.”

Vivienne chuckled weakly. “Well, Achak isn’t exactly normal, is he?”

Cass shrugged. “True. But still. I just want you to be safe.”

She laid her hand over Cass’s on the bathroom counter.

“I know," Viv said. "And I’m sorry for not telling you. It’s all a bit… overwhelming.”

After a moment of consideration, she added, “Tell you what, let’s have another girl’s night and I’ll tell you everything, okay?”

Vivienne was surprised by the tender expression that crossed Cass’s face.

“Okay," the redhead conceded. "I have a little something of my own I’ve been wanting to tell you, so at least it’ll be a fair trade.”

Well, that sounded suspicious.

Viv grimaced as she asked, “Don’t tell me you’ve fallen head over heels for Steve?”

Cass burst out in laughter, and gave Viv a playful shove. “Don’t even go there! He’s nice and all, but just so…”

Viv interceded, “Trust me, Cass, I get it. Same thing with Marc.”

As she let out a sound of disgust, Cass turned to look in the mirror and pulled a lipstick out of her purse to reapply it.

“I mean, he’s gotten better about it ever since you told him off, but I don’t think it’ll last.”

Viv had noticed that as well, and it made her consider actually quitting. But what else would she do? Achak had gotten himself a job to help pay for her bills, so she couldn’t exactly start mooching off of him. Maybe she could start her own business and sell produce from her garden
